A 60-year-old man was lucky to have some guardian angels running with him this past weekend during the Lincoln Half Marathon in Nebraska. Wallace Boever, an experienced runner, was about 10 miles into the race and didn't feel right. He stopped, but doesn't remember collapsing. A cardiologist was running right behind him and immediately started CPR. He was joined by a couple other doctors and a military medic, who showed up with a breathing mask and shocked Boever's heart back into rhythm. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors placed a stint to clear a blocked artery.
Whenever I hear a story this like, it's an important reminder to keep my CPR certification current. While I've never had to give CPR to a runner, I have stopped during a race to help someone who had fallen or was feeling sick. What about you? Have you ever been a Good Samaritan during a race?
